Need to change people s mindset : Meira Kuma

Workshop organised at Academy of Administration
Uplift of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes cannot be ensured by making laws alone and there is need to change people's mindset also. It is a matter of concern that a workshop is being organised for empowerment of these sections of society even 60 years after independence.
These views were expressed by Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Meira Kumar while inaugurating a workshop on 'Empowerment of scheduled castes/tribes' at RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration here today.
It was presided over by Academy of Administration Board of Governors Chairperson and Minister of State for General Administration Shri KL Agrawal. Minister of State for SC, ST Welfare Shri Harishankar Khatik was specially present at the workshop. MLAs and trainee officers of All-India/Central Services also attended it.

Smt. Meira Kumar said that political and administrative classes lead the nation. The political class can take a decision but the important responsibility of its implementation rests with the administrative class. Addressing the trainee officers, she said that ground realities of the country can be experienced by visiting villages, towns and districts. On the strength of this experience, they can make suggestions about what new laws are to be formulated. She called for action against the guilty of atrocities on people belonging to scheduled castes and tribes under Prevention of Atrocities Act adding that it will lead to social revolution.

Minister of State Shri Agrawal said that apart from state's development, Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan harbours the concern for every citizen of the state. The state government has launched several schemes for the welfare and uplift of the poor, especially the reserved classes, including Ladli Laxmi Yojana, Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana and distribution of free cycles to students.

In his address, Minister of State Shri Khatik said that development of the country is impossible without the welfare of the reserved classes. He also threw light on a number of schemes launched for the uplift and welfare of the reserved classed in Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier, academy's Director General Dr. Sandeep Khanna welcomed Smt. Meira Kumar, other guests and participants.

Those also present on the occasion included Director General of Chhattisgarh Academy of Administration Shri S Minj, Bhopal division commissioner Dr. Pukhraj Maroo, Commissioner Tribal Welfare Smt. Salina Singh, Secretary SC, ST Welfare Shri BK Batham and officers of various departments.
