BT brinjal to affect human health adversely : Dr Kusmaria

Expresses views at conference at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala
Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture Development Minister Dr. Ramkrishna Kusmaria has said giving permission for Bt brinjal will hit India's age old farming system. Bt brinjal will not only affect human health adversely but will also cast ill-effects on environment.
Dr. Kusmaria was addressing a conference at Thiruvanthapuram in Kerala recently. Agriculture Ministers of other states, agriculture scientists and progressive farmers also put forth their views at this conference, which was inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Shri VS Achutanand.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Kusmaria said that Madhya Pradesh is not opposed to modern methods of farming but is against those methods, which will destroy Indian system of agriculture in future. Dr. Kusmaria said that Madhya Pradesh government is going to announce a policy on organic farming through which efforts will be undertaken to turn Madhya Pradesh into an organic agriculture state. Soil fertility has been undermined due to continuous use of chemical fertilisers.
The ill-effects of chemical fertilisers are also visible on human health and environment. On Bt brinjal, the minister said that this variety entered Madhya Pradesh in 1990. It has caused several problems including skin diseases among the labourers working in its fields.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Kusmaria said that brinjal has originated in Madhya Pradesh where its 250 varieties are available and are sown in more than 16 thousand hectare land. High-quality brinjal is produced in Narmada basin and Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. He said that Bt brinjal is a genetically modified crop which will hit the human health on large scale. Dr. Kusmaria said that Madhya Pradesh will not give permission to Bt brinjal.
